SIANA (SEE-AW-NUH)

SOUND TO SIGHT. EMOTION TO EYE.

Until I was 22, I thought everyone saw colors as constantly as I did. Color patterns, unique hues and shifting shapes were “visible” in many songs. After my best friend suggested I use a notebook to keep track of my colourful experiences, it didn't take long before there were pages full of sketches. These uncommon drawings of my music-color experiences marked the beginning of my strange inner world disclosing itself to the one around me.

I have an unusual neurological condition called “Synesthesia” which causes me to experience two sensations at one time. Various everyday sounds like cars honking in traffic and typing on a keyboard are associated with both sound, colors and shapes. Emotions and physical pain are sensed with feeling and also seen with color and texture. But the best “cross-wiring” is my ability to see the music I hear. As my passion, music pulses in visual arrangements of rhythms and voices and instrumental outlines.

The focus of my works are created in the union of my senses. These beautiful sensory collisions can sometimes be (so) overwhelming.

I am merely painting a world waiting to be seen.
